Rewarding Land Stewards

Farmers and Ranchers

Farmers and ranchers protect the land and provide vital ecological services we often take for granted. REGEN1 is defining a new standard for farming, along with free support and resources to make regenerative agriculture viable for all farmers and ranchers, whatever their operation.

Created with Farmers and Ranchers,
for Farmers and Ranchers

REGEN1 is developing an inclusive standard, one designed to transition and reward farmers and ranchers at every scale and from any background.

Dozens of farmer/rancher meetings with producers across Northern California resulted in a co-created model to identify and support regenerative practices. It also recognized that not all producers are the same. While certifications are a valuable tool for communicating an adherence to verified farming practices, REGEN1 focuses on outcomes. It recognizes that farmers and ranchers often follow many different paths to reach their destination, so the program is open to all producers and designed to recognize their efforts at whatever point they’re now on in their journey:

  • Transitioning producers trying one new regenerative practice (e.g., cover crops)
  • Farmers and ranchers on a path of continuous improvement who’ve implemented some practices, but have yet to be recognized or rewarded for the ecosystem services they provide
  • Regenerative farmers and ranchers, often certified organic, who’ve practiced regenerative agriculture for years or even generations

For Farmers and Ranchers:
How to Join REGEN1

To become part of the REGEN1 community, producers can fill out a simple online questionnaire. This “community onboarding tool” is free, easy to use, and helps quickly gather information on what producers are doing and the range of ecosystem benefits they provide. The tool is being built in collaboration with OpenTEAM and Our Sci’s Survey Stack open source technology platform.

Create Your Personalized Producer Dashboard and Digital Fingerprint

When farmers and ranchers have completed their onboarding process, the REGEN1 platform automatically generates a dashboard that displays the full range of regenerative practices and outcomes happening on their land. This digital fingerprint can act as a baseline, one that’s different for each producer.

REGEN1 meets growers where they are; it values the transition process and recognizes that each producer will join our community at different points along their journey.

The REGEN1 tier system also takes into account the practices a grower is implementing as well as their level of community engagement, training, and education. These are captured with a mix of qualitative and quantitative monitoring and validation.

REGEN1 Community Tools

Every farmer and rancher onboarded onto the REGEN1 platform gains access to a free suite of tools. These include an online community for regenerative producers to share knowledge and resources, access to purchasers, mentorship opportunities, grant connections, storytelling tools, and information on carbon markets.

Access to Purchasers

Access to Purchasers

After completing the REGEN1 onboarding process, producers are given an online dashboard that displays their principles, practices, and the ecosystem benefits their farming operation provides. Buyers can access this information through a filterable purchasing dashboard that allows them to support producers according to specific targets.

Grant Opportunities

Grant Opportunities

REGEN1 farmers and ranchers can also choose to apply for grants that support the implementation of specific on-farm practices. REGEN1 will then pass this information along to technical assistance providers and grant-awarding groups like Restore CA.

Data Privacy

Farmers and ranchers have a heavy regulatory burden, and we’re not here to create more paperwork. One of the best features of our system is that it’s connected to others–enter data once, use it in many places. And, our privacy policy puts you in charge of your own data; it’s never shared without your permission. When you sign up with REGEN1, you’ll select which data you would like to appear on your dashboard. Anything you add to your dashboard later on will also prompt you to “opt-in” for sharing. It is our responsibility to ensure that terms and definitions are explained clearly, that any changes to the program are transparent, and that the producer always owns their information and has the choice to opt-in or opt-out of data sharing. We are co-creating this program with producers so it meets your needs and that policies regarding data privacy are clearly communicated and accessible to you.
